What is the IDEX project?

Grenoble is well-known for the quality of its science and technology, and its innovation potential. Thanks to the strong ties between universities, schools, national research organizations and socio-economic actors, the IDEX project “IDEX Université Grenoble Alpes: world-class innovation university” has been awarded the Excellence Initiative label, restricted to a dozen universities in France.

One ambition: becoming a world-class university

The Univ. Grenoble Alpes project aims at creating an internationally recognized integrated university based on:

  • Scientific excellence
  • A dynamic ecosystem supporting the transfer of knowledge to society
  • The importance of teaching and learning education, with a specific focus on students’ success
  • The involvement of socio-economic and cultural actors as well as local authorities

Relying on recent achievements (foundation of strong partnership, creation of a doctoral school, single affiliation for scientific publications, creation of research departments…) the partners of the IDEX projects commit to creating together a world-class innovation university that supports the development of the region. The IDEX is a lever to help reach such this ambitious goal, promoting interdisciplinarity and breaking barriers between universities, schools and research organizations. Univ. Grenoble Alpes aims at being an engine for knowledge transfer in the region.

Impactful actions

The actions of the IDEX project are designed to tackle two challenges:

  1. Achieve institutional integration
  2. Support excellence

Challenge 1: Achieve the institutional integration

Today, the academic and scientific cooperations in the region rely on the Communauté Université Grenoble Alpes (ComUE), which coordinates between actors and hosts shared structures and services. The roadmap of the IDEX project consists in building upon this instrument to create a shared destiny, defining our mutual strategy that will reveal how to turn a university system into an integrated university.

The key to this integrated university relies on two aspects: shared identity, and unified strategy.

Challenge 2: Support and develop excellence

The IDEX actions regarding research, transfer, education, international strategy, student life and campus life are organized around two main focuses.

The first focus deals with humanities and social sciences. A truly multidisciplinary institution has to give these sciences a key role, as contemporary scientific and societal challenges require their insights. The IDEX focuses specific means to support their development to reach international standards.

The second focus deals with the development of actions around 4 socio-economic challenges, relying on the existing potential in Grenoble:

  • Sustainable planet and society
  • Health, well-being and technology
  • Understanding and supporting innovation: culture, technology, organizations
  • Digital world
